CES 2018 Guide! What to see at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show

SPREAD THE LOVE -

Awwwwwww yeah!! It’s CES time again!! In past years you’ve seen us show the spoils of digging up ET from an Atari dump, you’ve seen us unveil the hottest kids’ smartwatch, you’ve seen R4RR correspondent Earl crash a hoverboard, you’ve seen us unveil the hottest LED fashion with light up dresses for the red carpet, you’ve seen us help unveil Marvel Ironman Jarvis screens in real life, and you’ve seen us take VR tech and gaming luxury to the next level.

BUT NOW IT IS CES 2018!! When a new year kicks in, before the Grammys, Before the Oscars, it’s CES. Every year technological advancement jumps leaps and bounds in the consumer sector, and every year we see new themes of innovation focus. We understand you can’t see everything, and let’s face it – there might be a lot of dud products out there and time wasters. SO, we’ve scoured through the exhibitors and HERE IS YOUR GUIDE TO WHAT WE THINK WILL BE SOME AWESOME THINGS TO CHECK OUT at CES 2018!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will again be at the forefront of CES.  There will be a cute little robot named Miko as well as other AI innovation.  A company called Veritone will be at CES and would like to remind us that AI is actually accomplishing great things in “government, politics and media, not the possible Skynet doomsday of fiction. ”  While I admit AI is a great thing, but…… the GOVERNMENT??   Maybe you want to march on down and see what they have to say at MP25068 South Hall 2 , at the Veritone-sponsored AI pavilion  – their answers to your questions might be interesting and educational, and at the very least prepare you for the appropriate “don’t tread on me” response you should have when it comes time to vote or protest these issues if necessary.

Veritone (NASDAQ: VERI), is someone we in the entertainment industry are familiar with – they’re the ones that use AI with use cases in media, public safety, government and law and they will be sharing how their platform, aiWARE, uses machine learning to deliver unprecedented insights by unlocking data from linear files such as radio and TV broadcasts, as well as public and private content globally.

Now that politics, civic duty, and the Terminator got a disclaimer 😉 , let’s check out more excitement on what’s hot to see:

Booth: Sands Halls A-D #43961; also in Coding & Play booth in Main Hall – South Hall 30717; & exhibiting at ShowStoppers

Root Robotics is on a global mission to revolutionize the development of coding and problem-solving skills with its fun and easy-to-use educational robot known as Root. Coders of any age or skill level can use Root as their creative tool in defying gravity and climbing walls, or moving about on smooth surfaces to draw artwork, scan creations, play music, respond to touch and color, or use many of its other unique abilities.

Voice OriginalsExhibiting at ShowStoppers,  is a new series of voice-augmented tabletop games. The world of each Voice Original is brought to life through great voice acting, thrilling music and sound effects; and Alexa serves as your guide to this unique experience, teaching the rules, keeping track of your progress and even helping in times of trouble. The first Voice Originalstitle is a travel trivia game When in Rome, where the questions are asked by real people recorded in cities around the world.  Players get to meet 20 real locals from cities around the world, from Mumbai to Chicago. They’ll ask you questions about local customs, street food and more. Getting the answers right and nabbing elusive Souvenirs earns you Explorer Points.
EMOTIX and Miko.  Speaking of Mumbai to Chicago (I’m originally from Chicago, and the EMOTIX co is created by IIT scholars).   Emotix is introducing Miko, India’s first companion robot.  I am looking forward to playing with this little guy (girl? Miko’s a girl’s name in Japan so not sure – guess I’ll find out).   Miko chats, and grows, and learns, and plays, and teaches.  Who knows, maybe I’ll make Miko my co-host ;).

Beasts of Balance BATTLES  Sensible Object brings the first expansion for award-winning augmented reality stacking game Beasts of Balance. BATTLES adds new levels of excitement and competition to the traditionally cooperative board game. In BATTLES, two to three players each take on the role of a Divine Creator of a single region: Land, Sea or Sky. The aim is to fill your region with powerful beasts while stealing and destroying those of your opponents.

Play Impossible

Play Impossible is a Seattle-based startup on a mission to re-ignite the simplicity and joy of face-to-face play. The Play Impossible Gameball™ is an active gaming system that brings the digital action outdoors with seven free connected ball games you can play on your own or with friends. Part of the Alexa Accelerator, Powered by Techstars, Play Impossible will introduce in 2018 new features to the Gameball that incorporate Alexa voice AI into the play experience. GREEN TECH!

Solable’s LaVie, which transforms tap water into pure mineral water.  The product will be making its debut at CES, and the company is also the recipient of CES’s Innovation Awards for the second year in a row!  The company will be located in Sands, Hall G – 50216.  LaVie turns tap water into pure mineral water via a glass bottle, which is placed in a natural bamboo case for 20 minutes. It removes chlorine, chloramine, pesticides, chemicals, odors and tastes, but leaves all minerals and trace elements untouched.  For each treatment cycle, the bottle, as well as the liter of water it contains, are completely sterilized! A.k.a. no bacteria or viruses can survive.  I need to travel with this!

SMART HOME TECH

Essence @ Sands, Halls A-D, #42952 – Senior care tech is a series of smart home solutions that help loved ones not be so worries about the every day lives of the elderly or disabled.  People can live on their own and trust the tech to alert if anything goes wrong.

ZLINK – I dig this brand.  The tiny but powerful ZLINK Smart Home Hub features built-in Wi-Fi and Z-Wave radios, requiring only a USB power supply.  Compatible with Amazon Alexa and certified Z-Wave devices, the hub provides voice control via Alexa, iOS and Android apps, as well as a web interface.  The company started with Amazon Alexa as its first Smart Home Assistant, as it is the most developed and stable voice assistant currently available (future plans include the addition of Google Home and HomeKit). he company will be in the Z-Wave Pavilion (Booth 41717).

HONORABLE MENTION

OK, anyone that was around for my Birthday and saw who I wanted to raise funds for knows that this year I am super geeky about charities like Step Up.   And not because I’m a great guy or anything, I selfishly would like to see more confident empowered women join us in the fight to ensure this world is the best that it can be.   ROAR for Good, a Philadelphia startup and Certified B Corporation®, is empowering women to live their lives boldly. Their wearable safety accessory, Athena, is designed to connect you with your loved ones when you need them most. At the touch of a button, Athena shares your location with your trusted network of friends & family via mobile SMS alerts. In more threatening situations, Athena can also sound a high frequency alarm.

Usually I prefer to remind women of their real power, not their fear of being a victim – However, ROAR doesn’t just want to put a bandaid on the problem of violence against women – they are committed to getting to the root cause. That’s why, as part of their ROAR Back program, ROAR contributes a portion of proceeds from each Athena sold to educational programs that have been shown to increase empathy and reduce violence.   To me, this is what using your tech, brain, and economic powers are all about – so be sure to pay them a visit and let them know on my behalf “Anand Bhatt thinks you’re awesome, please keep it up” Where: Booth 51464, Eureka Park, Sands Exhibit Hall.
