Ever wondered how audio technology could possibly achieve surround sound from your mobile device or laptop?  Today I decided to test out the World’s First 3D Acoustic 5.1 Surround Sound Earbuds from a brand called Oomo.

How did they do?

Well, the first thing I noticed is the packaging.  It’s a pretty fun experience opening the box.  I know that shouldn’t be a reason as to why I should choose a pair of earbuds but you know what? Design matters.  It is all part of the experience.  Especially when you spend this kind of money on audio gear.  It feels luxury and a bit exciting.

Inside the box is the travel case (although I might keep using the box for the aforementioned fun) as well as several ear attachments and the actual earbuds themselves.

How do they sound?

They’ve definitely got a more “open space” sound to them.  Much more immersive than a pair of Beats.   Much more.  At initial listen I couldn’t hear any low end though.  Then I realized my mistake.  Not sure you have to do this with your device, but I’m on a ROG.  I had to manually alert my laptop to switch to 5.1 sound and then also enable bass controls.

They’re quite impressive, initially tested using the tracks from the song in the video above.  Again, a hands down much better choice than Beats if you already plan on spending in that price range.  Like, it’s no contest.  For actual clarity and depth, these Oomo’s are obviously superior.  Not sure how they did it though. According to Oomo, there are multiple cavities where different frequencies are split into.  Perhaps this eliminates some sort of bleed.

 

THE NEXT CHALLENGE

What do y’all think? Should I actually try to mix down a new song with these?? Every recording artist knows that a mix done on headphones usually sounds like nonsense because the sound is unrealistic – too specific to the headphones to be able to be able to get good results.  Open backed headphones are an ok compromise but then you have to be in an ultra quiet room (and if you had an ultra quiet room you probably have studio monitors too).  The whole charm of wanting to create using earbuds is that you can do it on the road and in hotel rooms, like i did the Tropical Fusion album.   While I do like how that album turned out, it’s a far cry from the awesome sound of the Latindian Style album ;).

But with this sort of 3 cavity immersive 3D tech it’s possible that these earbuds can be used for a lot more than gaming and movie watching (which I just tested and decided that they do those two quite well).
